It's been amazing to watch as the #self-care movement has spread across the US. People are learning to take time to heal themselves, to be with themselves, and to give themselves time to enjoy life. They're learning how to set healthy boundaries in relationships, business partnerships, friendships and with their children. They’re understanding that it is OK to put themselves first. I truly hope that this becomes the normal for all beings.
Yet, there is a shadow self of self-care that is emerging. This side of self-care allows you the opportunity to use self-care as a crutch or excuse not to participate due to needing to take time for self-care. What does that look like? Well, to break it down simply; you are overbooking yourself and calling in a self-care day, instead of doing your responsibilities. Backing out of commitments because it is just too much. Ducking out of obligations that you assigned yourself. Canceling plans with friends because you simply don’t have the energy. Even avoiding calls, texts, and emails from people because you don’t have the mind to engaged.
When you back out, are you thinking about what that is doing to the other people that are involved? Are you taking into consideration their time that they’ve scheduled for you, the projects that they are waiting for you complete, or the money that they now need to scramble to come up with because you have ghosted them in the name of self-care? Are you feeling guilty or have a gnawing feeling in the pit of your stomach? Are you starting to hear negative self-talk telling you, how you’re letting others down and you’re a terrible person for it? Sometimes, you could be so lost in your burdens, you don’t even stop to consider that other people are now getting the burden that you’ve dropped.
Self-care days are very important, but they’re not supposed to a get out of jail free or selfish act that causes you to disregard others for your own personal needs. This simply applies to when you have made commitments, plans or finical agreements to others and are backing out, canceling and/or avoiding because you need an emergency self-care day.
Now, there are times where something can come up, so you need to rearrange your schedule. BUT, if it is starting to happen consistently, it's time to take an honest look at why. It’s time to admit to yourself that is not self-care.
In your mind, you’re saying that you are giving yourself a rest and recharge day, so, what’s wrong with that? Well, pushing yourself to the point of being overwhelmed, overburdened, and needing to have an emergency self-care day, is like trying to put a band aid over a gaping wound that needs to be stitched.
Self-care is not only taking yourself to dinner, have a spa day, having a binge night of Netflix, or being lazy all day and not getting out of your PJ's. It’s a constant DAILY practice. Making sure each day you are agreeing to things that are within reason of your time, money, and emotions. Booking time within EACH day to rest, relax, recharge, meditate or do absolutely nothing. Self-care is saying no to an event that you already know you don't want to go to when your first asked. Saying no to obligations that you don't have the finances for. Not squeezing some appointments or gatherings into your schedule because it must happen this week. It’s prioritizing the things that are needed in your life.
It’s asking yourself these questions when looking at your schedule and making plans:
If you're truly not sure about what the answer is to these questions, don't hesitate to ask someone if you can think it over before you commit. Better yet, ask them how much time you have to think it over before they need an answer. And just give them an answer, even if you have to say NO. Do this to yourself, give yourself 24 hours before committing to everything you’re not sure about. Even if your 100% positive in the moment that you want to do something, it’s important to reflect on all these questions to make sure you follow through. Even if it’s just following through with yourself.
So, I challenge you for the next month to ask yourself those questions and see how it feels. Especially with the energy of the Spring awakening and Summer around the corner, it’s easy to get swapped away in it. To over commit yourself because it all sound awesome. We’ve all been there, so excited to get out and do, but is it what we really need?
This is the light side of self-care; this helps prevent that negative self-talk and it is truly a gift to yourself. You’re giving yourself the opportunity to not have to come up with an excuse to get out of something. You’re also giving yourself the Self-Care that you deserve.
